Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God1 met him.
When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!"2 So he named that place Mahanaim.a33
Jacob sent messengers4 ahead of him to his brother Esau5 in the land of Seir,6 the country of Edom.74
He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my master8 Esau: 'Your servant9 Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban10 and have remained there till now.
I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants.11 Now I am sending this message to my lord,12 that I may find favor in your eyes.13' "
When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."147
In great fear15 and distress16 Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,b17 and the flocks and herds and camels as well.
He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group,c the groupd that is left may escape."
