Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz1 (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.27
There he built an altar,3 and he called the place El Bethel,a4 because it was there that God revealed himself to him5 when he was fleeing from his brother.68
Now Deborah, Rebekah's nurse,7 died and was buried under the oak8 below Bethel.9 So it was named Allon Bacuth.b9
After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,c10 God appeared to him again and blessed him.1110
God said to him, "Your name is Jacob,d but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.e "12 So he named him Israel.
And God said to him, "I am God Almightyf;13 be fruitful and increase in number.14 A nation15 and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body.1612
The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you.17"1813
Then God went up from him19 at the place where he had talked with him.
Jacob set up a stone pillar20 at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering21 on it; he also poured oil on it.2215
Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.g23
