1 El SEÑOR habló a Moisés en el desierto de Sinaí, en la tienda de reunión, el primer día del segundo mes, en el segundo año de su salida de la tierra de Egipto, diciendo:

2 Haz un censo ^[a] de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, todo varón, uno por uno;

3 de veinte años arriba, todos los que pueden salir a la guerra en Israel, tú y Aarón los contaréis ^[b] por sus ejércitos.

4 Con vosotros estará además, un hombre de cada tribu, cada uno jefe de su casa paterna.

5 Estos son los nombres de los hombres que estarán con vosotros: de Rubén, Elisur, hijo de Sedeur;

6 de Simeón, Selumiel, hijo de Zurisadai;

7 de Judá, Naasón, hijo de Aminadab;

8 de Isacar, Natanael, hijo de Zuar;

9 de Zabulón, Eliab, hijo de Helón;

10 de los hijos de José: de Efraín, Elisama, hijo de Amiud, y de Manasés, Gamaliel, hijo de Pedasur;

11 de Benjamín, Abidán, hijo de Gedeoni;

12 de Dan, Ahiezer, hijo de Amisadai;

13 de Aser, Pagiel, hijo de Ocrán;

14 de Gad, Eliasaf, hijo de Deuel;

15 de Neftalí, Ahira, hijo de Enán.

16 Estos son los que fueron llamados de la congregación, los principales de las tribus de sus padres; ellos fueron los jefes de las divisiones ^[c] de Israel.

17 Entonces Moisés y Aarón tomaron a estos hombres que habían sido designados por sus nombres,

18 y reunieron a toda la congregación el primer día del mes segundo. Y se registraron según sus antepasados por familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, uno por uno.

19 Tal como el SEÑOR lo había mandado a Moisés, los contó en el desierto de Sinaí.

20 De los hijos de Rubén, primogénito de Israel, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, uno por uno, todo varón de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

21 los enumerados ^[d] de la tribu de Rubén fueron cuarenta y seis mil quinientos.

22 De los hijos de Simeón, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, sus enumerados, según el número de nombres, uno por uno, todo varón de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

23 los enumerados de la tribu de Simeón fueron cincuenta y nueve mil trescientos.

24 De los hijos de Gad, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

25 los enumerados de la tribu de Gad fueron cuarenta y cinco mil seiscientos cincuenta.

26 De los hijos de Judá, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

27 los enumerados de la tribu de Judá fueron setenta y cuatro mil seiscientos.

28 De los hijos de Isacar, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

29 los enumerados de la tribu de Isacar fueron cincuenta y cuatro mil cuatrocientos.

30 De los hijos de Zabulón, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

31 los enumerados de la tribu de Zabulón fueron cincuenta y siete mil cuatrocientos.

32 De los hijos de José: de los hijos de Efraín, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

33 los enumerados de la tribu de Efraín fueron cuarenta mil quinientos.

34 De los hijos de Manasés, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

35 los enumerados de la tribu de Manasés fueron treinta y dos mil doscientos.

36 De los hijos de Benjamín, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

37 los enumerados de la tribu de Benjamín fueron treinta y cinco mil cuatrocientos.

38 De los hijos de Dan, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

39 los enumerados de la tribu de Dan fueron sesenta y dos mil setecientos.

40 De los hijos de Aser, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

41 los enumerados de la tribu de Aser fueron cuarenta y un mil quinientos.

42 De los hijos de Neftalí, fueron contados por su registro genealógico, por sus familias, por sus casas paternas, según el número de nombres, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra;

43 los enumerados de la tribu de Neftalí fueron cincuenta y tres mil cuatrocientos.

44 Estos son los que fueron enumerados, los que Moisés y Aarón contaron con los jefes de Israel, doce hombres, cada uno de los cuales era jefe de su casa paterna.

45 Y todos los enumerados de los hijos de Israel por sus casas paternas, de veinte años arriba, todo el que podía salir a la guerra en Israel,

46 fueron seiscientos tres mil quinientos cincuenta.

47 Pero los levitas no fueron enumerados con ellos según la tribu de sus padres.

48 Porque el SEÑOR había hablado a Moisés, diciendo:

49 Solamente la tribu de Leví no enumerarás, ni los contarás con los hijos de Israel;

50 sino que pondrás a los levitas a cargo del tabernáculo ^[e] del testimonio, de todos sus utensilios y de todo lo que le pertenece. Ellos llevarán el tabernáculo y todos sus utensilios, y lo cuidarán; además, acamparán alrededor del tabernáculo.

51 Y cuando el tabernáculo haya de ser trasladado, los levitas lo desarmarán; y cuando el tabernáculo acampe, los levitas lo armarán. Pero el extraño que se acerque, morirá.

52 Y acamparán los hijos de Israel, cada uno en su campamento, y cada uno junto a su bandera, según sus ejércitos.

53 Pero los levitas acamparán alrededor del tabernáculo del testimonio, para que no venga la ira sobre la congregación de los hijos de Israel. Los levitas, pues, tendrán a su cargo el tabernáculo del testimonio.

54 Así hicieron los hijos de Israel; conforme a todo lo que el SEÑOR había mandado a Moisés, así hicieron.

Números 1 Commentary

Chapter 1

This book is called NUMBERS from the several numberings of the people contained in it. It extends from the giving of the law at Sinai, till their arrival in the plains of Jordan. An account is given of their murmuring and unbelief, for which they were sentenced to wander in the wilderness nearly forty years; also some laws, both, moral and ceremonial. Their trials greatly tended to distinguish the wicked and hypocrites from the faithful and true servants of God, who served him with a pure heart.

The numbering of the Israelites. (1-43) The number of the people. (44-46) The Levites not numbered with the rest. (47-54)

Verses 1-43 The people were numbered to show God's faithfulness in thus increasing the seed of Jacob, that they might be the better trained for the wars and conquest of Canaan, and to ascertain their families in order to the division of the land. It is said of each tribe, that those were numbered who were able to go forth to war; they had wars before them, though now they met with no opposition. Let the believer be prepared to withstand the enemies of his soul, though all may appear to be peace.

Verses 44-46 We have here the sum total. How much was required to maintain all these in the wilderness! They were all provided for by God every day. When we observe the faithfulness of God, however unlikely the performance of his promise may appear, we may take courage as to those which yet remain to be fulfilled to the church of God.

Verses 47-54 Care is here taken to distinguish the tribe of Levi, which, in the matter of the golden calf, had distinguished itself. Singular services shall be recompensed by singular honours. It was to the honour of the Levites, that to them was committed the care of the tabernacle and its treasures, in their camps and in their marches. It was for the honour of the holy things that none should see them, or touch them, but those who were called of God to the service. We all are unfit and unworthy to have fellowship with God, till called by his grace into the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and so, being the spiritual seed of that great High Priest, we are made priests to our God. Great care must be taken to prevent sin, for preventing sin is preventing wrath. Being a holy tribe, they were not reckoned among other Israelites. They that minister about holy things, should neither entangle themselves, nor be entangled, in worldly affairs. And let every believer seek to do what the Lord has commanded.

INTRODUCTION TO NUMBERS

This book has its name from the account it gives of the "numbers" of the children of Israel, twice taken particularly; which name it has with this Greeks and Latins, and so with the Syriac and Arabic versions; but with the Jews it is called sometimes "Vajedabber", from the first word of it, "and the Lord spake"; and sometimes "Bemidbar", from the fifth word of the first verse, "in the wilderness", and sometimes "Sepher Pikkudim"; or, as with Origen {a}, "Ammesphkodim", the book of musters or surveys. That it was written by Moses is not to be doubted; and is indeed suggested by our Lord himself, Joh 5:46 compared with Nu 3:14, and the references to it, in the New Testament, fully ascertain to us Christians the authenticity of it, as that of our Lord hinted at, and those of the apostle in 1Co 10:4, Heb 9:13,14. It contains an history of the affairs of the Israelites, and of their travel in the wilderness for the space of thirty eight years; though the principal facts it relates were done in the second year of their coming out of Egypt, and in the last of their being in the wilderness; and it is not merely historical, but gives a particular account of several laws, ceremonial and judicial, to be observed by the people of Israel, as well as has many things in it very instructive, both of a moral and evangelical nature.

In this chapter orders are given to Moses to take the number of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upwards, Nu 1:1-3; and the men that were to assist in this work, one of each tribe are mentioned by name, Nu 1:4-16; all which was accordingly done, Nu 1:17-19; and the particular numbers of each tribe are recorded, as they were taken, Nu 1:20-44; and the sum total is given, Nu 1:45,46; the Levites being excepted, who were employed about the tabernacle, and so not to be employed in military service, Nu 1:47-51; they encamped about that, while the Israelites pitched their tents every man by his own camp and standard, Nu 1:52-54.
