  • a 3:5 - Or 'covetousness;' as Eph. 4.19 ('greedy unsatisfied lust'), and Eph. 5.5 ('unbridled lust').
  • b 3:7 - Or 'among whom.'
  • c 3:10 - Neos, i.e. young or fresh: see Luke 5.37, Heb. 12.24.
  • d 3:10 - Renewed -- the present tense -- is from the same root as kainos, as in Rom. 12.2; 2Cor. 4.16; Tit. 3.5; and refers to what is entirely new in contrast to old.
  • e 3:11 - Lit. 'all things,' as 1Cor. 15.28.
  • f 3:12 - The aorist: 'be in the state of having done it.'
  • g 3:13 - As Eph. 4.32.
  • h 3:16 - It is a question of spiritual understanding whether 'in all wisdom' relates to 'dwell' or to 'teaching.' It may be the former: Paul taught in all wisdom (ch. 1.28), and in them the word was so to dwell.
  • i 3:16 - 'In psalms,' &c., may be connected with 'singing' rather than with what precedes: but in Eph. 5.19, 'speaking' is connected with 'psalms.'
  • j 3:23 - Ek psuches: lit. 'from the soul.'
  • k 3:24 - Douleuo, serve as a bondman, see Note, 1Cor. 4.1.
