Jeremiah 30:5-15

5 "Thus says the LORD: We have heard a cry of panic, of terror, and no peace.
6 Ask now, and see, can a man bear a child? 1Why then do I see every man with his hands on his stomach 2like a woman in labor? 3Why has every face turned pale?
7 Alas! 4That day is so great 5there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.
8 "And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the LORD of hosts, that I will 6break his 7yoke from off your neck, and I will 8burst your bonds, 9and foreigners shall no more make a servant of him.[a]
9 But they shall serve the LORD their God and 10David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
10 11"Then fear not, 12O Jacob my servant, declares the LORD, nor be dismayed, O Israel; for behold, 13I will save you from far away, 14and your offspring from the land of their captivity. 15Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease, and none shall make him afraid.
11 16For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD; 17I will make a full end of all the nations among whom I scattered you, but of you I will not make a full end. 18I will 19discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.
12 "For thus says the LORD: 20Your hurt is incurable, 21and your wound is grievous.
13 There is none to uphold your cause, no medicine for your wound, 22no healing for you.
14 23All your lovers have forgotten you; they care nothing for you; for I have dealt you the blow of 24an enemy, the punishment 25of a merciless foe, because your guilt is great, 26because your sins are flagrant.
15 27Why do you cry out over your hurt? 28Your pain is incurable. Because your guilt is great, 29because your sins are flagrant, I have done these things to you.

Jeremiah 30:5-15 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 30

This chapter contains a prophecy of the call and conversion of the Jews in the latter day; which being a matter of moment and importance, and that it might continue, and be read hereafter, it is ordered to be written in a book, Jer 30:1,2; the thing itself is expressed by a return from captivity to their own land, Jer 30:3; but previous to this there would be most dreadful times, as never were the like, Jer 30:4-7; yet there would be a deliverance from them, and from the yoke of the oppressor; when the Jews should serve the Lord God, and the true Messiah, Jer 30:8,9; of which deliverance and salvation they are assured in the strongest terms, though all other nations should be made an end of, among whom they were, Jer 30:10,11; and though their ease might seem to be desperate, Jer 30:12-17; nevertheless they should be brought into a very comfortable and happy estate; their city rebuilt; their offspring increased; and religious worship established; and, above all, the Messiah should be made known to them as their King and Priest, and they appear to be the Lord's covenant people, Jer 30:18-22; and the chapter is concluded with threatening utter destruction to the wicked, Jer 30:23,24.
