As men moved eastward,a they found a plain in Shinarb1 and settled there.
They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks2 and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone,3 and tar4 for mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens,5 so that we may make a name6 for ourselves and not be scattered7 over the face of the whole earth."85
But the LORD came down9 to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language10 they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Come, let us11 go down12 and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."138
So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth,14 and they stopped building the city.
That is why it was called Babelc15--because there the LORD confused the language16 of the whole world.17 From there the LORD scattered18 them over the face of the whole earth.
This is the account19 of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the fatherd of Arphaxad.2011
And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.21
