They deride kings and scoff at rulers.1 They laugh at all fortified cities; they build earthen ramps2 and capture them.
Then they sweep past like the wind3 and go on-- guilty men, whose own strength is their god."4
O LORD, are you not from everlasting?5 My God, my Holy One,6 we will not die.7 O LORD, you have appointed8 them to execute judgment; O Rock,9 you have ordained them to punish.
Your eyes are too pure10 to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong.11 Why then do you tolerate12 the treacherous?13 Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?1414
You have made men like fish in the sea, like sea creatures that have no ruler.
The wicked15 foe pulls all of them up with hooks,16 he catches them in his net,17 he gathers them up in his dragnet; and so he rejoices and is glad.
Therefore he sacrifices to his net and burns incense18 to his dragnet, for by his net he lives in luxury and enjoys the choicest food.
Is he to keep on emptying his net, destroying nations without mercy?19
