If a person carries consecrated meat1 in the fold of his garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, oil or other food, does it become consecrated?2' " The priests answered, "No."
Then Haggai said, "If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?" "Yes," the priests replied, "it becomes defiled.3"
Then Haggai said, " 'So it is with this people4 and this nation in my sight,' declares the LORD. 'Whatever they do and whatever they offer5 there is defiled.
" 'Now give careful thought6 to this from this day ona--consider how things were before one stone was laid7 on another in the LORD's temple.816
When anyone came to a heap9 of twenty measures, there were only ten. When anyone went to a wine vat10 to draw fifty measures, there were only twenty.1117
I struck all the work of your hands12 with blight,13 mildew and hail,14 yet you did not turn15 to me,' declares the LORD.1618
'From this day on, from this twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, give careful thought17 to the day when the foundation18 of the LORD's temple was laid. Give careful thought:
Is there yet any seed left in the barn? Until now, the vine and the fig tree, the pomegranate19 and the olive tree have not borne fruit.20 " 'From this day on I will bless21 you.' "
The word of the LORD came to Haggai22 a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:2321
"Tell Zerubbabel24 governor of Judah that I will shake25 the heavens and the earth.
I will overturn26 royal thrones and shatter the power of the foreign kingdoms.27 I will overthrow chariots28 and their drivers; horses and their riders29 will fall, each by the sword of his brother.30
