Jeremiah 25:5 Meaning and Commentary

Jeremiah 25:5

They said
The prophets: this was the substance of their discourses and prophecies, what follows: turn ye again now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of
your doings;
repent of sins, and reform from them; particularly their idolatries, to which they were prone, and are after mentioned: and dwell in the land that the Lord hath given unto you to your
fathers for ever and ever;
that is, the land of Canaan, which was given to them, and their fathers before them, by the Lord, for an everlasting inheritance, provided they behaved towards him aright; for they held the possession of it by their obedience to his law; and now, notwithstanding all that they had done, or had been threatened with; yet, if they repented and reformed, they should still dwell in the land, and enjoy it, and all the blessings and privileges of it.

Jeremiah 25:5 In-Context

3 From the thirteenth year of Yoshiyahu the son of Amon, king of Yehudah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened.
4 The LORD has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, (but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear,)
5 saying, Return you now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even forevermore;
6 and don't go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and don't provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm.
7 Yet you have not listened to me, says the LORD; that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.
