Numbers 2

The LORD spoke to Moshe and to Aharon, saying,
"The children of Yisra'el shall encamp every man by his own standard, with the ensigns of their fathers' houses: at a distance from the tent of meeting shall they encamp around it."
Those who encamp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Yehudah, according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Yehudah shall be Nachshon the son of `Amminadav.
His division, and those who were numbered of them, were seventy-four thousand six hundred.
Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Yissakhar: and the prince of the children of Yissakhar shall be Netan'el the son of Tzu`ar.
His division, and those who were numbered of it, were fifty-four thousand four hundred.
The tribe of Zevulun: and the prince of the children of Zevulun shall be Eli'av the son of Helon.
His division, and those who were numbered of it, were fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
All who were numbered of the camp of Yehudah were one hundred eighty-six thousand four hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out first.
"On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Re'uven according to their divisions. The prince of the children of Re'uven shall be Elitzur the son of Shede'ur.
His division, and those who were numbered of it, were forty-six thousand five hundred.
"Those who encamp next to him shall be the tribe of Shim`on. The prince of the children of Shim`on shall be Shelumi'el the son of Tzurishaddai.
His division, and those who were numbered of them, were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
"The tribe of Gad: and the prince of the children of Gad shall be Elyasaf the son of Re`u'el.
His division, and those who were numbered of them, were forty-five thousand six hundred fifty.
"All who were numbered of the camp of Re'uven were one hundred fifty-one thousand four hundred fifty, according to their hosts. They shall set out second.
"Then the tent of meeting shall set out, with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camps. As they encamp, so shall they set out, every man in his place, by their standards.
"On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Efrayim according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Efrayim shall be Elishama the son of `Ammihud.
His division, and those who were numbered of them, were forty thousand five hundred.
"Next to him shall be the tribe of Menashsheh: and the prince of the children of Menashsheh shall be Gamli'el the son of Pedatzur.
His division, and those who were numbered of them, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.

"All who were numbered of the camp of Efrayim were one hundred eight thousand one hundred, according to their divisions. They shall set out third.
"On the north side shall be the standard of the camp of Dan according to their divisions: and the prince of the children of Dan shall be Achi`ezer the son of `Ammishaddai.

His division, and those who were numbered of them, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
"All who were numbered of the camp of Dan were one hundred fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall set out last by their standards."
These are those who were numbered of the children of Yisra'el by their fathers' houses. All who were numbered of the camps according to their hosts were six hundred three thousand five hundred fifty.
But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Yisra'el; as the LORD commanded Moshe.
Thus the children of Yisra'el did. According to all that the LORD commanded Moshe, so they encamped by their standards, and so they set out, everyone by their families, according to their fathers' houses.

Numbers 2 Commentary

Chapter 2

The order of the tribes in their tents.

- The tribes were to encamp about the tabernacle, which was to be in the midst of them. It was a token of God's gracious presence. Yet they were to pitch their tents afar off, in reverence to the sanctuary. The children of Israel put themselves in their posts, without murmuring or disputing; and as it was their safety, so it was their beauty. It is our duty and interest to be contented with the place allotted to us, and to endeavour to occupy it in a proper manner, without envying or murmuring; without ambition or covetousness. Thus the gospel church ought to be compact, according to the Scripture model, every one knowing and keeping his place; and then all that wish well to the church rejoice, beholding their order, ( Colossians 2:5 ) .
