They will not remain1 in the LORD's land; Ephraim will return to Egypt2 and eat uncleana food in Assyria.34
They will not pour out wine offerings4 to the LORD, nor will their sacrifices please5 him. Such sacrifices will be to them like the bread of mourners;6 all who eat them will be unclean.7 This food will be for themselves; it will not come into the temple of the LORD.85
What will you do9 on the day of your appointed feasts,10 on the festival days of the LORD?
Even if they escape from destruction, Egypt will gather them,11 and Memphis12 will bury them.13 Their treasures of silver14 will be taken over by briers, and thorns15 will overrun their tents.
The days of punishment16 are coming, the days of reckoning17 are at hand. Let Israel know this. Because your sins18 are so many and your hostility so great, the prophet is considered a fool,19 the inspired man a maniac.208
The prophet, along with my God, is the watchman over Ephraim,b yet snares21 await him on all his paths, and hostility in the house of his God.229
They have sunk deep into corruption,23 as in the days of Gibeah.24 God will remember25 their wickedness and punish them for their sins.2610
"When I found Israel, it was like finding grapes in the desert; when I saw your fathers, it was like seeing the early fruit27 on the fig28 tree. But when they came to Baal Peor,29 they consecrated themselves to that shameful idol30 and became as vile as the thing they loved.
Ephraim's glory31 will fly away like a bird32-- no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.3312
Even if they rear children, I will bereave34 them of every one. Woe35 to them when I turn away from them!3613
I have seen Ephraim,37 like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place.38 But Ephraim will bring out their children to the slayer."39
