Wail,1 for the day2 of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction3 from the Almighty.a4

Because of this, all hands will go limp,5 every man's heart will melt.6
8
Terror7 will seize them, pain and anguish will grip8 them; they will writhe like a woman in labor.9 They will look aghast at each other, their faces aflame.10

See, the day11 of the LORD is coming --a cruel12 day, with wrath13 and fierce anger14-- to make the land desolate and destroy the sinners within it.

The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light.15 The rising sun16 will be darkened17 and the moon will not give its light.18

I will punish19 the world for its evil, the wicked20 for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty21 and will humble22 the pride of the ruthless.23
12
I will make man24 scarcer than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir.25
13
Therefore I will make the heavens tremble;26 and the earth will shake27 from its place at the wrath28 of the LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger.29
14
Like a hunted30 gazelle, like sheep without a shepherd,31 each will return to his own people, each will flee32 to his native land.33
15
Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall34 by the sword.35
16
Their infants36 will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished.37
