Isaiah 40:14-24 (New International Version)

View In My Bible
14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge1 or showed him the path of understanding?2 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales;3 he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.4 16 Lebanon5 is not sufficient for altar fires, nor its animals6 enough for burnt offerings. 17 Before him all the nations7 are as nothing;8 they are regarded by him as worthless and less than nothing.9 18 To whom, then, will you compare God?10 What image11 will you compare him to? 19 As for an idol,12 a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith13 overlays it with gold14 and fashions silver chains for it. 20 A man too poor to present such an offering selects wood15 that will not rot. He looks for a skilled craftsman to set up an idol16 that will not topple.17 21 Do you not know? Have you not heard?18 Has it not been told19 you from the beginning?20 Have you not understood21 since the earth was founded?22 22 He sits enthroned23 above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.24 He stretches out the heavens25 like a canopy,26 and spreads them out like a tent27 to live in.28 23 He brings princes29 to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.30 24 No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root31 in the ground, than he blows32 on them and they wither,33 and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.34
