Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine1 and champions at mixing drinks,223
who acquit the guilty for a bribe,3 but deny justice4 to the innocent.524
Therefore, as tongues of fire6 lick up straw7 and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay8 and their flowers blow away like dust;9 for they have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word10 of the Holy One11 of Israel.
Therefore the LORD's anger12 burns against his people; his hand is raised and he strikes them down. The mountains shake,13 and the dead bodies14 are like refuse15 in the streets.16 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,17 his hand is still upraised.1826
He lifts up a banner19 for the distant nations, he whistles20 for those at the ends of the earth.21 Here they come, swiftly and speedily!
Not one of them grows tired22 or stumbles, not one slumbers or sleeps; not a belt23 is loosened at the waist,24 not a sandal thong is broken.2528
Their arrows are sharp,26 all their bows27 are strung; their horses' hoofs28 seem like flint, their chariot wheels like a whirlwind.2929
Their roar is like that of the lion,30 they roar like young lions; they growl as they seize31 their prey and carry it off with no one to rescue.3230
In that day33 they will roar over it like the roaring of the sea.34 And if one looks at the land, he will see darkness35 and distress;36 even the light will be darkened37 by the clouds.
