Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz,
"Ask the LORD your God for a sign,1 whether in the deepest depths or in the highest heights.2"
But Ahaz said, "I will not ask; I will not put the LORD to the test.3"
Then Isaiah said, "Hear now, you house of David!4 Is it not enough5 to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience6 of my God7 also?
Therefore the Lord himself will give youa a sign:8 The virgin9 will be with child and will give birth to a son,10 andb will call him Immanuel.c1115
He will eat curds12 and honey13 when he knows enough to reject the wrong and choose the right.
But before the boy knows14 enough to reject the wrong and choose the right,15 the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.1617
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since Ephraim broke away17 from Judah--he will bring the king of Assyria.18"
