The Lord has sent a message1 against Jacob; it will fall on Israel.
All the people will know it-- Ephraim2 and the inhabitants of Samaria3-- who say with pride and arrogance4 of heart,
"The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone;5 the fig6 trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.7"
But the LORD has strengthened Rezin's8 foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.
Arameans9 from the east and Philistines10 from the west have devoured11 Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger12 is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.1313
But the people have not returned14 to him who struck15 them, nor have they sought16 the LORD Almighty.
So the LORD will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed17 in a single day;1815
the elders19 and prominent men20 are the head, the prophets21 who teach lies22 are the tail.
Those who guide23 this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray.2417
Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,25 nor will he pity26 the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly27 and wicked,28 every mouth speaks vileness.29 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.3018
Surely wickedness burns like a fire;31 it consumes briers and thorns,32 it sets the forest thickets ablaze,33 so that it rolls upward in a column of smoke.
By the wrath34 of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched35 and the people will be fuel for the fire;36 no one will spare his brother.3720
On the right they will devour, but still be hungry;38 on the left they will eat,39 but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspringa:
Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh;40 together they will turn against Judah.41 Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.42
