Esdras 10

1 Y orando Esdras y confesando, llorando y postrándose delante de la casa de Dios, se juntó a él una muy grande congregación de Israel, hombres, mujeres y niños; y lloraba el pueblo con gran llanto

2 Entonces respondió Secanías hijo de Jehiel, de los hijos de Elam, y dijo a Esdras: Nos hemos rebelado contra nuestro Dios, pues tomamos mujeres extranjeras de los pueblos de la tierra; mas hay aún esperanza para Israel sobre esto

3 Por tanto ahora hagamos pacto con nuestro Dios, que echaremos todas las mujeres y los nacidos de ellas, según el consejo del Señor, y de los que temen el mandamiento de nuestro Dios; y hágase conforme a la ley

4 Levántate, porque a ti toca el negocio, y nosotros estaremos contigo; esfuérzate, y ponlo por obra

5 Entonces se levantó Esdras, y juramentó a los príncipes de los sacerdotes y de los levitas, y a todo Israel, que harían conforme a esto; y ellos juraron

6 Se levantó luego Esdras de delante de la Casa de Dios, y se fue a la cámara de Johanán hijo de Eliasib; e ido allá, no comió pan ni bebió agua, porque se entristeció sobre la prevaricación de los de la transmigración

7 E hicieron pasar pregón por Judá y por Jerusalén a todos los hijos de la transmigración, que se juntaran en Jerusalén

8 y que el que no viniera dentro de tres días, conforme al acuerdo de los príncipes y de los ancianos, perdiera toda su hacienda, y él fuera apartado de la congregación de los de la transmigración

9 Así fueron reunidos todos los varones de Judá y de Benjamín en Jerusalén dentro de tres días, a los veinte del mes, el cual era el mes noveno; y se sentó todo el pueblo en la plaza de la Casa de Dios, temblando con motivo de aquel negocio, y a causa de las lluvias

10 Y se levantó Esdras el sacerdote, y les dijo: Vosotros habéis prevaricado, por cuanto tomasteis mujeres extrañas, añadiendo así sobre la culpa de Israel

11 Ahora pues, dad confesión al SEÑOR Dios de vuestros padres, y haced su voluntad, y apartaos de los pueblos de las tierras, y de las mujeres extranjeras

12 Y respondió toda la congregación, y dijeron en alta voz: Así se haga conforme a tu palabra

13 Mas el pueblo es mucho, y el tiempo lluvioso, y no hay fuerza para estar en la calle; ni la obra es de un día ni de dos, porque somos muchos los que hemos prevaricado en este negocio

14 Estén ahora nuestros príncipes, los de toda la congregación; y todos aquellos que en nuestras ciudades hubieren tomado mujeres extranjeras, vengan a tiempos aplazados, y con ellos los ancianos de cada ciudad, y los jueces de ellas, hasta que apartemos de nosotros el furor de la ira de nuestro Dios sobre esto

15 Fueron pues puestos sobre este negocio Jonatán hijo de Asael, y Jahazías hijo de Ticva; y Mesulam y Sabetai, levitas, les ayudaron

16 E hicieron así los hijos de la transmigración. Y fueron apartados Esdras y los varones cabezas de los padres en la casa de sus padres, y todos ellos por sus nombres; y se sentaron el primer día del mes décimo para inquirir sobre el negocio

17 Y concluyeron, con todos aquellos que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, el primer día del mes primero

18 Y de los hijos de los sacerdotes que habían tomado mujeres extranjeras, fueron hallados éstos: De los hijos de Jesúa hijo de Josadac, y de sus hermanos: Maasías, Eliezer, Jarib, y Gedalías

19 y dieron su mano en promesa de echar sus mujeres, y ofrecieron como culpados un carnero de los rebaños por su culpa

20 Y de los hijos de Imer: Hanani y Zebadías

21 Y de los hijos de Harim: Maasías, Elías, Semaías, Jehiel, y Uzías

22 Y de los hijos de Pasur: Elioenai, Maasías, Ismael, Natanael, Jozabad, y Elasa

23 Y de los hijos de los levitas: Jozabad, y Simei, Kelaía (éste es Kelita), Petaías, Judá y Eliezer

24 Y de los cantores, Eliasib; y de los porteros: Salum, Telem, y Uri

25 Asimismo de Israel, de los hijos de Paros: Ramía, Jezías, Malquías, Mijamín, Eleazar, Malquías, y Benaía

26 Y de los hijos de Elam: Matanías, Zacarías, Jehiel, Abdi, Jerimot, y Elías

27 Y de los hijos de Zatu: Elioenai, Eliasib, Matanías, Jerimot, Zabad, y Aziza

28 Y de los hijos de Bebai: Johanán, Hananías, Zabai, y Atlai

29 Y de los hijos de Bani: Mesulam, Maluc, Adaía, Jasub, Seal, y Ramot

30 Y de los hijos de Pahat-moab: Adna, Quelal, Benaía, Maasías, Matanías, Bezaleel, Binúi y Manasés

31 Y de los hijos de Harim: Eliezer, Isías, Malquías, Semaías, Simeón

32 Benjamín, Maluc, y Semarías

33 De los hijos de Hasum: Matenai, Matata, Zabad, Elifelet, Jeremai, Manasés, y Simei

34 De los hijos de Bani: Madai, Amram, Uel

35 Benaía, Bedías, Quelúhi

Esdras 10 Commentary

Chapter 10

Ezra encourages to reformation. (1-5) He assembles the people. (6-14) Reformation effected. (15-44)

Verses 1-5 Shechaniah owned the national guilt. The case is sad, but it is not desperate; the disease threatening, but not incurable. Now that the people begin to lament, a spirit of repentance seems to be poured out; now there is hope that God will forgive, and have mercy. The sin that rightly troubles us, shall not ruin us. In melancholy times we must observe what makes for us, as well as against us. And there may be good hopes through grace, even where there is the sense of great guilt before God. The case is plain; what has been done amiss, must be undone again as far as possible; nothing less than this is true repentance. Sin must be put away, with a resolution never to have any thing more to do with it. What has been unjustly got, must be restored. Arise, be of good courage. Weeping, in this case, is good, but reforming is better. As to being unequally yoked with unbelievers, such marriages, it is certain, are sinful, and ought not to be made; but now they are not null, as they were before the gospel did away the separation between Jews and Gentiles.

Verses 6-14 There is hope concerning people, when they are convinced, not only that it is good to part with their sins, but that it is necessary; we must do it, or we are undone. So rich is the mercy, and so plenteous the redemption of God, that there is hope for the vilest who hear the gospel, and are willing to accept of free salvation. When sinners mourn for their sins, and tremble at the word of God, there is hope that they will forsake them. To affect others with godly sorrow or love to God, we must ourselves be affected. It was carefully agreed how this affair should be carried on. That which is hastily resolved on seldom proves lasting.

Verses 15-44 The best reformers can but do their endeavour; when the Redeemer himself shall come to Zion, he shall effectually turn away ungodliness from Jacob. And when sin is repented of and forsaken, God will forgive it; but the blood of Christ, our Sin-offering, is the only atonement which takes away our guilt. No seeming repentance or amendment will benefit those who reject Him, for self-dependence proves them still unhumbled. All the names written in the book of life, are those of penitent sinners, not of self-righteous persons, who think they have no need of repentance.

INTRODUCTION TO EZRA 10

Upon Ezra's prayer and confession, it was proposed by Shechaniah, that those who had married strange wives should put them away with their children, which they swore to do, Ezr 10:1-5, and proclamation was made throughout the land for all to meet at Jerusalem in three days' time, and accordingly they did, Ezr 10:6-9 when, at the exhortation of Ezra, all agreed to it, and persons were appointed to see it done, and the work was finished in the space of three months, Ezr 10:10-17 and a list of the names of those is given who had married such wives, and now put them away; of the priests, Ezr 10:18-22, of the Levites, Ezr 10:23,24, of the other Israelites, Ezr 10:24-44.
