For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman1 shapes it with his chisel.24
They adorn it with silver3 and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.45
Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak;5 they must be carried because they cannot walk.6 Do not fear them; they can do no harm7 nor can they do any good."86
No one is like you,9 O LORD; you are great,10 and your name is mighty in power.
Who should not revere11 you, O King of the nations?12 This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you.
They are all senseless13 and foolish;14 they are taught by worthless wooden idols.159
Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish16 and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made17 is then dressed in blue and purple-- all made by skilled workers.
But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God,18 the eternal King.19 When he is angry,20 the earth trembles;21 the nations cannot endure his wrath.2211
"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish23 from the earth and from under the heavens.' "a12
But God made24 the earth25 by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom26 and stretched out the heavens27 by his understanding.
When he thunders,28 the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning29 with the rain30 and brings out the wind from his storehouses.31
