But they did not listen or pay attention;1 instead, they followed the stubbornness of their evil hearts.2 So I brought on them all the curses3 of the covenant I had commanded them to follow but that they did not keep.4' "
Then the LORD said to me, "There is a conspiracy5 among the people of Judah and those who live in Jerusalem.
They have returned to the sins of their forefathers,6 who refused to listen to my words.7 They have followed other gods8 to serve them.9 Both the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant10 I made with their forefathers.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: 'I will bring on them a disaster11 they cannot escape.12 Although they cry13 out to me, I will not listen14 to them.
The towns of Judah and the people of Jerusalem will go and cry out to the gods to whom they burn incense,15 but they will not help them at all when disaster16 strikes.
You have as many gods17 as you have towns,18 O Judah; and the altars you have set up to burn incense19 to that shameful20 god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.'
"Do not pray21 for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen22 when they call to me in the time of their distress.
"What is my beloved doing in my temple as she works out her evil schemes with many? Can consecrated meat23 avert [ your punishment]?24 When you engage in your wickedness, then you rejoice.a "
The LORD called you a thriving olive tree25 with fruit beautiful in form. But with the roar of a mighty storm he will set it on fire,26 and its branches will be broken.2717
The LORD Almighty, who planted28 you, has decreed disaster29 for you, because the house of Israel and the house of Judah have done evil and provoked30 me to anger by burning incense to Baal.31
