Wild donkeys stand on the barren heights1 and pant like jackals; their eyesight fails for lack of pasture."27
Although our sins testify3 against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of your name.4 For our backsliding5 is great; we have sinned6 against you.
O Hope7 of Israel, its Savior8 in times of distress,9 why are you like a stranger in the land, like a traveler who stays only a night?
Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save?10 You are among11 us, O LORD, and we bear your name;12 do not forsake13 us!
This is what the LORD says about this people: "They greatly love to wander; they do not restrain their feet.14 So the LORD does not accept15 them; he will now remember16 their wickedness and punish them for their sins."1711
Then the LORD said to me, "Do not pray18 for the well-being of this people.
Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry;19 though they offer burnt offerings20 and grain offerings,21 I will not accept22 them. Instead, I will destroy them with the sword,23 famine24 and plague."2513
But I said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, the prophets26 keep telling them, 'You will not see the sword or suffer famine.27 Indeed, I will give you lasting peace28 in this place.' "
Then the LORD said to me, "The prophets are prophesying lies29 in my name. I have not sent30 them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions,31 divinations,32 idolatriesa and the delusions of their own minds.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says about the prophets who are prophesying in my name: I did not send them, yet they are saying, 'No sword or famine will touch this land.' Those same prophets will perish33 by sword and famine.3416
And the people they are prophesying to will be thrown out into the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and sword. There will be no one to bury35 them or their wives, their sons or their daughters.36 I will pour out on them the calamity they deserve.37
