"I will send four kinds of destroyers1 against them," declares the LORD, "the sword2 to kill and the dogs3 to drag away and the birds4 of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.54
I will make them abhorrent6 to all the kingdoms of the earth7 because of what Manasseh8 son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jerusalem.
"Who will have pity9 on you, O Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will stop to ask how you are?
You have rejected10 me," declares the LORD. "You keep on backsliding. So I will lay hands11 on you and destroy you; I can no longer show compassion.127
I will winnow13 them with a winnowing fork at the city gates of the land. I will bring bereavement14 and destruction on my people,15 for they have not changed their ways.168
I will make their widows17 more numerous than the sand of the sea. At midday I will bring a destroyer18 against the mothers of their young men; suddenly I will bring down on them anguish and terror.199
The mother of seven will grow faint20 and breathe her last.21 Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced22 and humiliated. I will put the survivors to the sword23 before their enemies,"24 declares the LORD.
Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth,25 a man with whom the whole land strives and contends!26 I have neither lent27 nor borrowed, yet everyone curses28 me.
The LORD said, "Surely I will deliver you29 for a good purpose; surely I will make your enemies plead30 with you in times of disaster and times of distress.
"Can a man break iron-- iron from the north31--or bronze?
Your wealth32 and your treasures I will give as plunder,33 without charge,34 because of all your sins throughout your country.35
