Whoever stays in this city will die by the sword, famine or plague.1 But whoever goes out and surrenders2 to the Babylonians who are besieging you will live; he will escape with his life.310
I have determined to do this city harm4 and not good, declares the LORD. It will be given into the hands5 of the king of Babylon, and he will destroy it with fire.'611
"Moreover, say to the royal house7 of Judah, 'Hear the word of the LORD;
O house of David, this is what the LORD says: " 'Administer justice8 every morning; rescue from the hand of his oppressor9 the one who has been robbed, or my wrath will break out and burn like fire10 because of the evil11 you have done-- burn with no one to quench12 it.
I am against13 you, [ Jerusalem,] you who live above this valley14 on the rocky plateau, declares the LORD-- you who say, "Who can come against us? Who can enter our refuge?"1514
I will punish you as your deeds16 deserve, declares the LORD. I will kindle a fire17 in your forests18 that will consume everything around you.' "
