I will banish from them the sounds1 of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,2 the sound of millstones3 and the light of the lamp.411
This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,5 and these nations will serve6 the king of Babylon seventy years.712
"But when the seventy years8 are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon9 and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,a for their guilt," declares the LORD, "and will make it desolate10 forever.
I will bring upon that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written11 in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.
They themselves will be enslaved12 by many nations13 and great kings; I will repay14 them according to their deeds and the work of their hands."
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup15 filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send16 you drink it.
When they drink17 it, they will stagger18 and go mad19 because of the sword20 I will send among them."
So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations to whom he sent21 me drink it:
Jerusalem22 and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin23 and an object of horror and scorn24 and cursing,25 as they are today;2619
Pharaoh king27 of Egypt,28 his attendants, his officials and all his people,
and all the foreign people there; all the kings of Uz;29 all the kings of the Philistines30 (those of Ashkelon,31 Gaza,32 Ekron, and the people left at Ashdod);
