"But you did not listen to me," declares the LORD, "and you have provoked1 me with what your hands have made,2 and you have brought harm3 to yourselves."
Therefore the LORD Almighty says this: "Because you have not listened to my words,
I will summon4 all the peoples of the north5 and my servant6 Nebuchadnezzar7 king of Babylon," declares the LORD, "and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroya8 them and make them an object of horror and scorn,9 and an everlasting ruin.1010
I will banish from them the sounds11 of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,12 the sound of millstones13 and the light of the lamp.1411
This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,15 and these nations will serve16 the king of Babylon seventy years.1712
"But when the seventy years18 are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon19 and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,b for their guilt," declares the LORD, "and will make it desolate20 forever.
I will bring upon that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written21 in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.
They themselves will be enslaved22 by many nations23 and great kings; I will repay24 them according to their deeds and the work of their hands."
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup25 filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send26 you drink it.
When they drink27 it, they will stagger28 and go mad29 because of the sword30 I will send among them."
So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations to whom he sent31 me drink it:
