I will summon1 all the peoples of the north2 and my servant3 Nebuchadnezzar4 king of Babylon," declares the LORD, "and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants and against all the surrounding nations. I will completely destroya5 them and make them an object of horror and scorn,6 and an everlasting ruin.710
I will banish from them the sounds8 of joy and gladness, the voices of bride and bridegroom,9 the sound of millstones10 and the light of the lamp.1111
This whole country will become a desolate wasteland,12 and these nations will serve13 the king of Babylon seventy years.1412
"But when the seventy years15 are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon16 and his nation, the land of the Babylonians,b for their guilt," declares the LORD, "and will make it desolate17 forever.
I will bring upon that land all the things I have spoken against it, all that are written18 in this book and prophesied by Jeremiah against all the nations.
They themselves will be enslaved19 by many nations20 and great kings; I will repay21 them according to their deeds and the work of their hands."
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: "Take from my hand this cup22 filled with the wine of my wrath and make all the nations to whom I send23 you drink it.
When they drink24 it, they will stagger25 and go mad26 because of the sword27 I will send among them."
So I took the cup from the LORD's hand and made all the nations to whom he sent28 me drink it:
Jerusalem29 and the towns of Judah, its kings and officials, to make them a ruin30 and an object of horror and scorn31 and cursing,32 as they are today;3319
Pharaoh king34 of Egypt,35 his attendants, his officials and all his people,
