You show love1 to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps2 of their children3 after them. O great and powerful God,4 whose name is the LORD Almighty,519
great are your purposes and mighty are your deeds.6 Your eyes are open to all the ways of men;7 you reward everyone according to his conduct and as his deeds deserve.820
You performed miraculous signs and wonders9 in Egypt10 and have continued them to this day, both in Israel and among all mankind, and have gained the renown11 that is still yours.
You brought your people Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders, by a mighty hand12 and an outstretched arm13 and with great terror.1422
You gave them this land you had sworn to give their forefathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.1523
They came in and took possession16 of it, but they did not obey you or follow your law;17 they did not do what you commanded them to do. So you brought all this disaster18 upon them.
"See how the siege ramps19 are built up to take the city. Because of the sword, famine and plague,20 the city will be handed over to the Babylonians who are attacking it. What you said21 has happened,22 as you now see.
And though the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, you, O Sovereign LORD, say to me, 'Buy the field23 with silver and have the transaction witnessed.24' "
Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
"I am the LORD, the God of all mankind.25 Is anything too hard for me?2628
Therefore, this is what the LORD says: I am about to hand this city over to the Babylonians and to Nebuchadnezzar27 king of Babylon, who will capture it.28
