I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking;1 all the hills were swaying.
I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.226
I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;3 all its towns lay in ruins4 before the LORD, before his fierce anger.527
This is what the LORD says: "The whole land will be ruined,6 though I will not destroy7 it completely.
Therefore the earth will mourn8 and the heavens above grow dark,9 because I have spoken and will not relent,10 I have decided and will not turn back.11"
At the sound of horsemen and archers12 every town takes to flight.13 Some go into the thickets; some climb up among the rocks.14 All the towns are deserted;15 no one lives in them.
What are you doing,16 O devastated one? Why dress yourself in scarlet and put on jewels17 of gold? Why shade your eyes with paint?18 You adorn yourself in vain. Your lovers19 despise you; they seek your life.2031
I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,21 a groan as of one bearing her first child-- the cry of the Daughter of Zion22 gasping for breath,23 stretching out her hands24 and saying, "Alas! I am fainting; my life is given over to murderers."25
