This is what the LORD Almighty says: "The people of Israel are oppressed,1 and the people of Judah as well. All their captors hold them fast, refusing to let them go.234
Yet their Redeemer3 is strong; the LORD Almighty4 is his name. He will vigorously defend their cause5 so that he may bring rest6 to their land, but unrest to those who live in Babylon.
"A sword7 against the Babylonians!"8 declares the LORD-- "against those who live in Babylon and against her officials and wise9 men!
A sword against her false prophets! They will become fools. A sword against her warriors!10 They will be filled with terror.1137
A sword against her horses and chariots12 and all the foreigners in her ranks! They will become women.13 A sword against her treasures!14 They will be plundered.
A drought ona her waters!15 They will dry16 up. For it is a land of idols,17 idols that will go mad with terror.
"So desert creatures18 and hyenas will live there, and there the owl will dwell. It will never again be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation.1940
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah20 along with their neighboring towns," declares the LORD, "so no one will live there; no man will dwell in it.2141
"Look! An army is coming from the north;22 a great nation and many kings are being stirred23 up from the ends of the earth.2442
They are armed with bows25 and spears; they are cruel26 and without mercy.27 They sound like the roaring sea28 as they ride on their horses; they come like men in battle formation to attack you, O Daughter of Babylon.2943
The king of Babylon has heard reports about them, and his hands hang limp.30 Anguish has gripped him, pain like that of a woman in labor.31
