They were banished from their fellow men, shouted at as if they were thieves.

They were forced to live in the dry stream beds, among the rocks and in holes in the ground.1

They brayed2 among the bushes3 and huddled in the undergrowth.

A base and nameless brood,4 they were driven out of the land.5

"And now their sons mock me6 in song;7 I have become a byword8 among them.
10
They detest me9 and keep their distance; they do not hesitate to spit in my face.10

Now that God has unstrung my bow11 and afflicted me,12 they throw off restraint13 in my presence.

On my right14 the tribea attacks; they lay snares15 for my feet,16 they build their siege ramps against me.17

They break up my road;18 they succeed in destroying me19-- without anyone's helping them.b
14
They advance as through a gaping breach;20 amid the ruins they come rolling in.

Terrors21 overwhelm me;22 my dignity is driven away as by the wind, my safety vanishes like a cloud.23
