He came as a witness to testify1 concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.2
He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light3 that gives light to every man4 was coming into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,5 the world did not recognize him.
He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.6
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed7 in his name,8 he gave the right to become children of God9--
children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.10
The Word became flesh11 and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,12 the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace13 and truth.14
John testifies15 concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "16
From the fullness17 of his grace18 we have all received one blessing after another.
For the law was given through Moses;19 grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.20
