Amos 5:17

17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of thee, said the LORD.

Amos 5:17 Meaning and Commentary

Amos 5:17

And in all vineyards [shall be] wailing
The vines being destroyed, and no grapes to be gathered, and put into the press; when there used to be great shoutings, and large expressions of joy, at the gathering in of the vintage, and pressing the grapes; but now there shall be a different tone; see ( Jeremiah 48:32 Jeremiah 48:33 ) ; for I will pass through thee, saith the Lord;
through their cities, towns, and country, fields and vineyards, and destroy all in his way, as he passed through Egypt when he destroyed their firstborn.

Amos 5:17 In-Context

15 Hate the evil and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate; it may be that the LORD God of the hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
16 Therefore the LORD, the God of the hosts, the Lord, said this: Wailing shall be in all streets, and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.
17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing, for I will pass through the midst of thee, said the LORD.
18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD shall be darkness, and not light.
19 As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him.
