Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD.1 They served the Baals and the Ashtoreths,2 and the gods of Aram,3 the gods of Sidon,4 the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites56 and the gods of the Philistines.7 And because the Israelites forsook the LORD8 and no longer served him,
he became angry9 with them. He sold them10 into the hands of the Philistines and the Ammonites,
who that year shattered and crushed them. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites on the east side of the Jordan in Gilead,11 the land of the Amorites.
The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah,12 Benjamin and the house of Ephraim;13 and Israel was in great distress.
Then the Israelites cried14 out to the LORD, "We have sinned15 against you, forsaking our God and serving the Baals."1611
The LORD replied, "When the Egyptians,17 the Amorites,18 the Ammonites,19 the Philistines,2012
the Sidonians, the Amalekites21 and the Maonitesa22 oppressed you23 and you cried to me for help, did I not save you from their hands?
But you have forsaken24 me and served other gods,25 so I will no longer save you.
Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save26 you when you are in trouble!27"
But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do with us whatever you think best,28 but please rescue us now."
Then they got rid of the foreign gods among them and served the LORD.29 And he could bear Israel's misery30 no longer.3117
When the Ammonites were called to arms and camped in Gilead, the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah.3218
The leaders of the people of Gilead said to each other, "Whoever will launch the attack against the Ammonites will be the head33 of all those living in Gilead."
