Then came hetoDerbeandLystra:and, behold, a certaindisciplewasthere, namedTimotheus, the son of a certainwoman, which was a Jewess, and believed;but his father was a Greek:
2
Which was well reported of by the brethren that were atLystraandIconium.
3
HimwouldPaul have to go forthwithhim;andtook and circumcisedhimbecause of the Jewswhichwereinthosequarters:for they knewallthathisfatherwas a Greek.
4
Andas they went through the cities, they deliveredthem the decrees for to keep, that were ordainedof the apostlesandelderswhich were atJerusalem.
5
And so*were the churchesestablished in the faith, andincreased in numberdaily*.
6
Now when they had gone throughoutPhrygiaand the region of Galatia, and were forbiddenof the HolyGhost to preach the wordinAsia,
7
After they were cometoMysia, they assayed to go intoBithynia:but the Spiritsufferedthemnot.
9
And a visionappeared to Paulin the night; There stood* a manofMacedonia, and prayedhim*, saying, Come overintoMacedonia, and helpus.
10
Andafter he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to gointoMacedonia, assuredly gatheringthat the Lord had calledus for to preach the gospel unto them.
11
ThereforeloosingfromTroas, we came with a straight coursetoSamothracia,and the next day toNeapolis;
12
And from thencetoPhilippi, whichis the chief[a]city of that part of Macedonia, and a colony:and we wereinthatcityabidingcertaindays.
13
And on the sabbath[b]wewent out of the cityby a river side, whereprayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither.
14
And a certainwomannamedLydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshippedGod,heard us: whoseheart the Lordopened, that she attended unto the things which were spokenofPaul.
15
Andwhen she was baptized, andherhousehold, she besought us, saying, If ye have judgedme to befaithful to the Lord, comeintomyhouse, and abide there. And she constrainedus.
16
And it came to pass, as wewenttoprayer, a certaindamselpossessed with a spirit of divination[c]metus, whichbroughthermastersmuchgain by soothsaying:
17
The samefollowedPaulandus, and cried, saying, Thesemenare the servants of the most highGod,whichshew unto us the way of salvation.
18
Andthis did she*manydays.ButPaul, being grieved, turnedandsaid to the spirit, I commandtheein the name of JesusChrist to come out ofher. And he came out the samehour.
19
And when hermasterssawthat the hope of theirgains was gone, they caughtPaulandSilas, and drew them into the marketplace[d]unto the rulers,
20
Andbroughtthem to the magistrates, saying, Thesemen, beingJews, do exceedingly troubleourcity,
21
Andteachcustoms, whicharenotlawful for us to receive, neither to observe, beingRomans.
22
And the multitude rose up togetheragainstthem:and the magistrates rent offtheirclothes, and commanded to beat them.
23
And when they had laidmanystripes upon them, they cast them intoprison, charging the jailor to keepthemsafely:
24
Who, having receivedsuch a charge, thrusttheminto the innerprison, andmadetheirfeetfastin the stocks.
25
AndatmidnightPaulandSilasprayed, and sang praises unto God:and the prisonersheardthem.
26
Andsuddenly there was a greatearthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: andimmediatelyall the doors were opened, and every one'sbands were loosed.
27
And the keeper of the prisonawaking out of his sleep, andseeing the prisondoorsopen, he drew out his sword, and would have killedhimself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled.
28
ButPaulcried with a loudvoice,saying, Dothyselfnoharm:for we areallhere.
29
Then he called for a light, and sprang in, andcametrembling, and fell down beforePaulandSilas,
30
Andbroughtthemout, and said, Sirs, whatmustIdoto be saved?
31
And they said, Believeon the LordJesusChrist, andthou shalt be saved, andthyhouse.
32
And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were inhishouse.
33
And he tookthemthesamehour of the night, and washed their stripes*; and was baptized, heandallhis, straightway.
34
And when he had broughttheminto his house, he setmeat before them, andrejoiced, believing in God with allhishouse.
35
And when it wasday, the magistratessent the serjeants, saying, Letthosemengo.
36
And the keeper of the prisontoldthissayingtoPaul*, The magistrates have sentto let you go: nowthereforedepart, and goinpeace.
37
ButPaulsaiduntothem, They have beatenusopenlyuncondemned, beingRomans*, and have cast us intoprison;andnow do they thrustusoutprivily?nayverily;but let them comethemselves and fetchusout.
38
And the serjeantstoldthesewords unto the magistrates:and they feared, when they heardthat they wereRomans.
39
And they came and besoughtthem, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.
40
And they went out of the prison, and enteredinto the house of Lydia:and when they had seen the brethren, they comfortedthem, anddeparted.
