But the chief priestsandelderspersuaded the multitudethat they should askBarabbas,anddestroyJesus.

The governoransweredandsaid unto them,Whetherof the twain will ye that I release unto you*? They said, Barabbas.

Pilatesaith unto them,What shall I dothen with Jesuswhich is calledChrist? They allsay unto him, Let him be crucified.

And the governorsaid, Why,whatevil hath he done? But they cried out the more,saying, Let him be crucified.

WhenPilatesawthat he could prevailnothing,but that rather a tumult was made, he tookwater, and washed his handsbefore the multitude,saying, I aminnocentof the blood of this just person:seeye to it.

Thenansweredall the people, and said, Hisblood be onus,andonourchildren.

Then released heBarabbas unto them:and when he had scourgedJesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Then the soldiers of the governortookJesusinto the common hall,[a] and gathereduntohim the wholeband of soldiers.

And they strippedhim, and put onhim a scarletrobe.
29
And when they had platted a crownofthorns, they put it uponhishead,and a reedinhis right hand:and they bowed the kneebeforehim, and mockedhim,saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

And they spituponhim, and took the reed,andsmotehimon the head.
