In the days of her affliction and wandering Jerusalem remembers all the treasures that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into enemy hands, there was no one to help her.1 Her enemies looked at her and laughed2 at her destruction.
Jerusalem has sinned3 greatly and so has become unclean.4 All who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness;5 she herself groans6 and turns away.
Her filthiness clung to her skirts; she did not consider her future.7 Her fall8 was astounding; there was none to comfort9 her. "Look, O LORD, on my affliction,10 for the enemy has triumphed."
The enemy laid hands on all her treasures;11 she saw pagan nations enter her sanctuary12-- those you had forbidden13 to enter your assembly.
All her people groan14 as they search for bread;15 they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. "Look, O LORD, and consider, for I am despised."
"Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?16 Look around and see. Is any suffering like my suffering17 that was inflicted on me, that the LORD brought on me in the day of his fierce anger?1813
"From on high he sent fire, sent it down into my bones.19 He spread a net20 for my feet and turned me back. He made me desolate,21 faint22 all the day long.
"My sins have been bound into a yokea;23 by his hands they were woven together. They have come upon my neck and the Lord has sapped my strength. He has handed me over24 to those I cannot withstand.
"The Lord has rejected all the warriors in my midst;25 he has summoned an army26 against me tob crush my young men.27 In his winepress28 the Lord has trampled29 the Virgin Daughter30 of Judah.
"This is why I weep and my eyes overflow with tears.31 No one is near to comfort32 me, no one to restore my spirit. My children are destitute because the enemy has prevailed."3317
Zion stretches out her hands,34 but there is no one to comfort her. The LORD has decreed for Jacob that his neighbors become his foes;35 Jerusalem has become an unclean36 thing37 among them.
