And he said, "The Son of Man1 must suffer many things2 and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law,3 and he must be killed4 and on the third day5 be raised to life."6
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.7
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.8
What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self ?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him9 when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.10
I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James11 with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.12
As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.
Two men, Moses and Elijah,
appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure,13 which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions were very sleepy,14 but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
