But you have turned from the way1 and by your teaching have caused many to stumble;2 you have violated the covenant3 with Levi,"4 says the LORD Almighty.
"So I have caused you to be despised5 and humiliated6 before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality7 in matters of the law."8
Have we not all one Fathera ?9 Did not one God create us?10 Why do we profane the covenant11 of our fathers by breaking faith12 with one another?
Judah has broken faith. A detestable13 thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the LORD loves,14 by marrying15 the daughter of a foreign god.1612
As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the LORD cut him off17 from the tents of Jacobb18--even though he brings offerings19 to the LORD Almighty.
Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears.20 You weep and wail21 because he no longer pays attention22 to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.2314
You ask,24 "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness25 between you and the wife of your youth,26 because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.2715
Has not [the LORD] made them one?28 In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring.c29 So guard yourself30 in your spirit, and do not break faith31 with the wife of your youth.
"I hate divorce,32" says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himselfd with violence33 as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit,34 and do not break faith.
You have wearied35 the LORD with your words. "How have we wearied him?" you ask.36 By saying, "All who do evil are good in the eyes of the LORD, and he is pleased37 with them" or "Where is the God of justice?38"
