2 Samuel 10:15 Meaning and Commentary

2 Samuel 10:15

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before
Israel
Considered it in their minds, and conversed with one another about it, and fearing what would be the consequence of it:

they gathered themselves together;
not only the forces got together again, that fled before Joab, but all the kings of Syria united their forces together, as appears from ( 2 Samuel 10:19 ) ; supposing that David would avenge himself on them for assisting the Ammonites against him; and therefore judged it advisable to raise a large army, that they might be in a condition to receive him.

2 Samuel 10:15 In-Context

13 But when Joab and his soldiers moved in to fight the Arameans, they ran off in full retreat.
14 Then the Ammonites, seeing the Arameans run for dear life, took to their heels from Abishai and went into the city. So Joab left off fighting the Ammonites and returned to Jerusalem.
15 When the Arameans saw how badly they'd been beaten by Israel, they picked up the pieces and regrouped.
16 Hadadezer sent for the Arameans who were across the River. They came to Helam. Shobach, commander of Hadadezer's army, led them.
17 All this was reported to David.
