Matthew 24:37 Meaning and Commentary

Matthew 24:37

But as the days of Noe were
So Noah is usually called Noe by the Septuagint: the sense is, as were the practices of the men of that generation, in which Noah lived, so will be the practices of the men of that age, in which the son of man comes; or as the flood, which happened in the days of Noah, was sudden and unexpected; it came upon men thoughtless about it, though they had warning of it; and was universal, swept them all away, excepting a few that were saved in the ark: so shall also the coming of the son of man be;
to take vengeance on the Jews, on a sudden, at an unawares, when they would be unthoughtful about it; though they were forewarned of it by Christ and his apostles, and their destruction be as universal; all would be involved in it, excepting a few, that were directed a little before, to go out of the city of Jerusalem to Pella; where they were saved, as Noah and his family were in the ark.

Matthew 24:37 In-Context

35 Sky and earth will wear out; my words won't wear out.
36 "But the exact day and hour? No one knows that, not even heaven's angels, not even the Son. Only the Father knows.
37 "The Arrival of the Son of Man will take place in times like Noah's.
38 Before the great flood everyone was carrying on as usual, having a good time right up to the day Noah boarded the ark.
39 They knew nothing - until the flood hit and swept everything away.
