4
The one who says, "1I have come to 2know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a 3liar, and 4the truth is not in him;
5
but whoever*5keeps His word, in him the 6love of God has truly been perfected. 7By this we know that we are in Him:
6
the one who says he 8abides in Him 9oughthimself to walk in the samemanner as He walked.
7
10Beloved, I am 11not writing a newcommandment to you, but an oldcommandmentwhich you have had12from the beginning; the oldcommandment is the wordwhich you have heard.
8
[a]On the otherhand, I am writing13a newcommandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because14the darkness is passingaway and 15the trueLight is alreadyshining.
9
The one who says he is in the Light and yet 16hates his 17brother is in the darknessuntilnow.
10
18The one who loves his brotherabides in the Light and there is nocause for stumbling in him.
11
But the one who 19hates his brother is in the darkness and 20walks in the darkness, and does not knowwhere he is goingbecause the darkness has 21blinded his eyes.
12
I am writing to you, 22littlechildren, because23your sins have been forgiven you for His name'ssake.
13
I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him 24who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, youngmen, because25you have overcome26the evilone. I have written to you, children, because27you know the Father.
14
I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him 28who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, youngmen, because you are 29strong, and the 30word of Godabides in you, and 31you have overcome the evilone.
