So Davidwent out whereverSaulsent him, and aprospered; and Saulset him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul'sservants.
It happened as they were coming, when Davidreturned from killing the Philistine, that 1the womencame out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meetKingSaul, with tambourines, with joy and with bmusicalinstruments.
The women2sang as they cplayed, and said, "3Saul has slain his thousands, 4And David his tenthousands."
Then Saulbecameveryangry, for thissayingddispleased him; and he said, "They have ascribed to Davidtenthousands, but to me they have ascribedthousands. Now 5what more can he have but the kingdom?"
9Saullooked at David with suspicion from that day on.
Now it came about on the nextday that 6an evilspirit from Godcamemightily upon Saul, and 7he raved in the midst of the house, while David was playing the harp with his hand, e8as usual; and f9a spear was in Saul'shand.
1110Saulhurled the spear for he thought, "I will gpinDavid to the wall." But Davidhescaped from his presencetwice.
Now 11Saul was afraid of David, 12for the LORD was with him but 13had departed from Saul.
Therefore Saulremoved him from ihis presence and appointed him as his commander of a thousand; and 14he went out and came in before the people.
14David was jprospering in all his ways for 15the LORD was with him.
When Saulsaw that he was kprosperinggreatly, he dreaded him.
But 16allIsrael and JudahlovedDavid, and he went out and came in before them.
