1 Samuel 2:2-12

2 "1There is no one holy like the LORD, Indeed, 2there is no one besides You, 3Nor is there any rock like our God.
3 "Boast no more so very proudly, 4Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; 5For the LORD is a God of knowledge, 6And with Him actions are weighed.
4 "7The bows of the mighty are shattered, 8But the feeble gird on strength.
5 "Those who were full hire themselves out for bread, But those who were hungry cease to hunger. 9Even the barren gives birth to seven, But 10she who has many children languishes.
6 "11The LORD kills and makes alive; 12He brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 "13The LORD makes poor and rich; 14He brings low, He also exalts.
8 "15He raises the poor from the dust, 16He lifts the needy from the ash heap 17To make them sit with nobles, And inherit a seat of honor; 18For the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, And He set the world on them.
9 "19He keeps the feet of His godly ones, 20But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; 21For not by might shall a man prevail.
10 "22Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered; 23Against them He will thunder in the heavens, 24The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; 25And He will give strength to His king, 26And will exalt the horn of His anointed."
11 Then Elkanah went to his home at 27Ramah. 28But the boy ministered to the LORD before Eli the priest.

1 Samuel 2:2-12 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO FIRST SAMUEL 2

In this chapter the song of Hannah is recorded, 1Sa 2:1-10, and an account is given of the return of Elkanah and Hannah to their own home, and of the care she took yearly to provide a coat for Samuel, and of her being blessed with many other children, and of the growth and ministry of Samuel before the Lord, 1Sa 2:11,18-21,26, and of the wickedness of the sons of Eli, 1Sa 2:12-17, and of Eli's too gentle treatment of them when he reproved them for it, 1Sa 2:22-25 and of a sharp message sent him from the Lord on that account, threatening destruction to his house, of which the death of his two sons would be a sign, 1Sa 2:27-36.
