He didevil in the sight of the LORD his God ; 1he did not humble himself 2beforeJeremiah the prophetawho spoke for the LORD.
133He alsorebelled against KingNebuchadnezzarwho had made him swear allegiance by God. But 4he stiffened his neck and hardened his heartagainstturning to the LORDGod of Israel.
14Furthermore, all the officials of the priests and the people were veryunfaithful following all the abominations of the nations ; and they defiled the house of the LORDwhich He had sanctified in Jerusalem.

The LORD, the God of their fathers, 5sent word to them again and again by His messengers, because He hadcompassion on His people and on His dwellingplace ;

but they continually 6mocked the messengers of God, 7despised His words and scoffed at His prophets, 8until the wrath of the LORDarose against His people, untilthere was noremedy.
179Therefore He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans who slew their youngmen with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and hadnocompassion on youngman or virgin, oldman or infirm ; He gave them all into his hand.
1810All the articles of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king and of his officers, he brought them all to Babylon.

Then 11they burned the house of God and brokedown the wall of Jerusalem, and burnedall its fortifiedbuildings with fire and destroyedall its valuablearticles.
20Those who had escaped from the sword he 12carriedaway to Babylon ; and 13they were servants to him and to his sonsuntil the rule of the kingdom of Persia,
2114to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until15the land had enjoyed its sabbaths. 16All the days of its desolation it keptsabbathb17until seventyyears were complete.
2218Now in the firstyear of Cyrusking of Persia -in order to fulfill the word of the LORD19by the mouth of Jeremiah -the LORD20stirred up the spirit of Cyrusking of Persia, so that he sent a proclamationthroughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,
