24 Now behold, 1Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him 2carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and 3Abiathar came up until all the people had finished passing from the city.
25 The king said to Zadok, "Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the sight of the LORD, then 4He will bring me back again and show me both it and 5His habitation.
26 "But if He should say thus, '6I have no delight in you,' behold, here I am, 7let Him do to me as seems good to Him."
27 The king said also to Zadok the priest, "Are you not 8a seer? Return to the city in peace and your 9two sons with you, your son Ahimaaz and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.
28 "See, I am going to wait 10at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me."
29 Therefore Zadok and Abiathar returned the ark of God to Jerusalem and remained there.
30 And David went up the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went, and 11his head was covered and he walked 12barefoot. Then all the people who were with him each covered his head and went up weeping as they went.
31 Now someone told David, saying, "13Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." And David said, "O LORD, I pray, 14make the counsel of Ahithophel foolishness."
32 It happened as David was coming to the summit, where * God was worshiped, that behold, Hushai the 15Archite met him with his coat torn and dust on his head.
33 David said to him, "If you pass over with me, then you will be 16a burden to me.
34 "But if you return to the city, and 17say to Absalom, 'I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father's servant in time past, so I will now be your servant,' then you can thwart the counsel of Ahithophel for me.

INTRODUCTION TO SECOND SAMUEL 15

This chapter relates how that Absalom by various artful methods stole away the hearts of the people of Israel, 2Sa 15:1-6; that pretending a vow he had made, he got leave of the king to go to Hebron to perform it, 2Sa 15:7-9; where he formed a considerable conspiracy, 2Sa 15:10-12; of which David having information, thought it advisable to depart from Jerusalem, both for his own safety, and the good of the city, which he did with his family, and guards, and much people, 2Sa 15:13-18; though he would have persuaded Ittai the Gittite to have returned, but could not prevail upon him, 2Sa 15:19-23; however, he sent back the priests and the Levites with the ark, lest any harm should come to that, 2Sa 15:24-29; and as he and the people went up the mount of Olives weeping, it was told him that Ahithophel was among the conspirators, on which he put up a prayer that his counsel might be infatuated, 2Sa 15:30,31; and Hushai the Archite coming to him at that juncture, he sent him back to Jerusalem to defeat the counsel of Ahithophel, and to send him word by the priests what he should hear there from time to time, 2Sa 15:32-37.
