And when they had received a pledge from 1Jason and the others, they released them.

Paul at Berea

2The brethren immediately sent 3Paul and Silas away by night to 4Berea, and when they arrived, they went into 5the synagogue of the Jews.
Now these were more noble-minded than those in 6Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily * to see whether these things were so.
Therefore 7many of them believed, along with a number * of 8prominent Greek 9women and men.
But when the Jews of 10Thessalonica found out that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in 11Berea also, they came there as well, agitating and stirring up the crowds.
Then immediately 12the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea; and 13Silas and 14Timothy remained there.
Now 15those who escorted Paul brought him as far as 16Athens; and receiving a command for 17Silas and Timothy to 18come to him as soon as possible, they left.

Paul at Athens

Now while Paul was waiting for them at 19Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was observing the city full of idols.
So he was reasoning 20in the synagogue with the Jews and 21the God-fearing Gentiles, and in the market place every day with those who happened to be present.
And also some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him. Some were saying, "What would 22this idle babbler wish to say?" Others *, "He seems to be a proclaimer of strange deities,"-because he was preaching 23Jesus and the resurrection.
And they 24took him and brought him to the 25Areopagus, saying, "May we know what 26this new teaching is which you are proclaiming?
