1The word of God kept on spreading; and 2the number of the disciples continued to increasegreatly in Jerusalem, and a greatmany of the priests were becomingobedient to 3the faith.

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was performinggreat4wonders and signsamong the people.

But somemen from what was called the Synagogue of the Freedmen, including both5Cyrenians and 6Alexandrians, and some from 7Cilicia and 8Asia, rose up and argued with Stephen.

But they were unable* to cope with the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

Then they secretlyinducedmen to say, "We have heard him speakblasphemouswordsagainstMoses and against God."

And they stirred up the people, the elders and the scribes, and they 9came up to him and dragged him away and brought him before10the Council.

They putforward11falsewitnesses who said, "Thismanincessantly*speaksagainstthis12holyplace and the Law;

for we have heard him say that 13thisNazarene, Jesus, will destroythisplace and alter14the customswhichMoseshandeddown to us."

And fixing their gaze on him, all who were sitting in the 15Councilsaw his facelike the face of an angel.
