1
Now 1Abraham was old, advanced in age ; and the LORD had 2blessedAbraham in everyway.
2Abrahamsaid to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had3charge of all that he owned, "4Pleaseplace your handunder my thigh,
3
and I will make you swear by the LORD, 5the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you 6shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of 7the Canaanites, amongwhom I live,
4
but you will go to 8my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my sonIsaac."
5
The servantsaid to him, "Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to thisland ; should I take your sonback to the land from where you came ?"
6
Then Abrahamsaid to him, "9Beware that you do not take my sonbackthere !
7
"10The LORD, the God of heaven, whotook me from my father'shouse and from the land of my birth, and whospoke to me and whoswore to me, saying, '11To your adescendants I will givethisland,' He will send12His angelbefore you, and you will take a wife for my son from there.
8
"But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will 13be free from this my oath ; 14only do not take my sonbackthere."
9
So the servant15placed his handunder the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerningthismatter.
10
Then the servanttooktencamels from the camels of his master, and set out with a variety of 16goodthings of his master's in his hand ; and he arose and went to bMesopotamia, to 17the city of Nahor.
11
He made the camelskneeldownoutside the city by 18the well of water at eveningtime, 19the time when women go out to drawwater.
12
He said, "20O LORD, the God of my masterAbraham, pleasec21grant me successtoday, and showlovingkindness to my masterAbraham.
13"Behold, 22I am standing by the dspring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to drawwater ;
14
now may it be that the girl to whom I say, 'Pleaseletdown your jar so that I may drink,' and ewho answers, 'Drink, and I will water your camelsalso '-may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servantIsaac ; and by this I will know that You have shownlovingkindness to my master."
1523Before he had finishedspeaking, behold, 24Rebekahwho was born to Bethuel the son of 25Milcah, the wife of Abraham'sbrotherNahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder.
16
The girl was 26verybeautiful, a virgin, and noman had fhadrelations with her; and she wentdown to the spring and filled her jar and came up.
17
Then the servantran to meet her, and said, "27Please let me drink a littlewater from your jar."
1828She said, "Drink, my lord "; and she quicklylowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink.
19
Now when she had finishedgiving him a drink, 29she said, "I will drawalso for your camelsuntil they have finisheddrinking."
20
So she quicklyemptied her jar into the trough, and ranback to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.
2130Meanwhile, the man was gazing at her gin silence, to know whether the LORD had made his journeysuccessfulor not.
22When the camels had finisheddrinking, the mantook a 31goldringweighing a half-shekel and twobracelets for her hwristsweighingten shekels in gold,
23
and said, "Whosedaughter are you? Pleasetell me, is thereroom for us to lodge in your father'shouse ?"
24
She said to him, "32I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."
25
Again she said to him, "We have plenty of bothstraw and feed, and room to lodge in."
26
Then the man33bowedlow and worshiped the LORD.
27
He said, "34Blessed be the LORD, the God of my masterAbraham, who has not forsaken35His lovingkindness and His truthtoward my master ; as for me, 36the LORD has guided me in the way to the house of my master'sbrothers."
28
Then 37the girlran and told her mother'shousehold about thesethings.
29
Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was 38Laban ; and Labanranoutside to the man at the spring.
30
When he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister'siwrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, "jThis is what the mansaid to me," he went to the man ; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.
31
And he said, "39Come in, 40blessed of the LORD ! Why do you standoutside since 41I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels ?"
32
So the manentered the house. Then k42Laban unloaded the camels, and he gavestraw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the menwho were with him.
33
But when food was setbefore him to eat, he said, "I will not eatuntil I have told my business." And he said, "Speak on."
34
So he said, "I am 43Abraham'sservant.
35
"The LORD has greatly44blessed my master, so that he has becomelrich ; and He has given him 45flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and maids, and camels and donkeys.
36
"Now 46Sarah my master'swifebore a son to my mastermin her oldage, and 47he has given him all that he has.
37
"48My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whoseland I nlive ;
38
but you shall go to my father'shouse and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.'
39
"49I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman does not follow me.'
40
"He said to me, '50The LORD, beforewhom I have 51walked, will send52His angel with you to make your journeysuccessful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father'shouse ;
4153then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives ; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.'
42
"So 54I cametoday to the spring, and said, 'O LORD, the God of my masterAbraham, ifnow You will make my journey on which I go55successful ;
43behold, 56I am standing by the ospring, and may it be that the maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, "57Please let me drink a littlewater from your jar ";
44
and she will say to me, "You drink, and I will draw for your camelsalso "; let her be the womanwhom the LORD has appointed for my master'sson.'
45"Before I had finished58speaking in my heart, behold, 59Rebekahcame out with her jar on her shoulder, and wentdown to the spring and drew, and 60I said to her, 'Please let me drink.'
46
"She quicklylowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, '61Drink, and I will water your camelsalso '; so I drank, and she watered the camelsalso.
47
"62Then I asked her, and said, 'Whosedaughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor'sson, whomMilcahbore to him'; and I put the 63ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her pwrists.
48
"And I 64bowedlow and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my masterAbraham, 65who had guided me in the rightway to take the daughter of my master'sqkinsman for his son.
49
"So nowif you are going to r66dealkindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, let me know, that I may turn to the righthandor the left."
50
Then Laban and Bethuelreplied, "67The mattercomes from the LORD ; 68so we cannotspeak to you badorgood.
51"Here is Rebekahbefore you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master'sson, as the LORD has spoken."
52WhenAbraham'sservantheard their words, he 69bowed himself to the groundsbefore the LORD.
53
The servantbrought out 70articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah ; he also gavepreciousthings to her brother and to her mother.
54
Then he and the menwho were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they arose in the morning, he said, "71Send me away to my master."
55
But her brother and her mothersaid, "72Let the girlstay with us a few days, sayten ; afterward she may go."
56
He said to them, "Do not delay me, since 73the LORD has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master."
57
And they said, "We will call the girl and tconsult her wishes."
58
Then they calledRebekah and said to her, "Will you go with thisman ?" And she said, "I will go."
59
Thus they sentaway their sisterRebekah and 74her nurse with Abraham'sservant and his men.
60
They blessedRebekah and said to her, "May you, our sister, 75Becomethousands of tenthousands, And may 76your udescendantspossess The gate of those who hate them."
61
Then Rebekaharose with her maids, and they mounted the camels and followed the man. So the servanttookRebekah and departed.
62
Now Isaac had come from going to 77Beer-lahai-roi ; for he vwas living in 78the wNegev.
63Isaacwent out 79to xmeditate in the fieldtowardevening ; and 80he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming.
64Rebekahlifted up her eyes, and when she sawIsaac she dismounted from the camel.
65
She said to the servant, "Who is that manwalking in the field to meet us?" And the servantsaid, "He is my master." Then she took her yveil and covered herself.
66
The servanttoldIsaacall the things that he had done.
67
Then Isaacbrought her into his motherSarah'stent, and 81he tookRebekah, and she became his wife, and 82he loved her; thus Isaac was comfortedafter83his mother's death.
