Now the wholeearthaused the samelanguage and bthe samewords.

It came about as they journeyedeast, that they found a plain in the land1of Shinar and csettledthere.

They said to oneanother, "Come, let us makebricks and burn them thoroughly." And they usedbrick for stone, and they used2tar for mortar.

They said, "Come, let us build for ourselves a city, and a tower whose top3will reach into heaven, and let us make for ourselves 4a name, otherwise we 5will be scattered abroad over the face of the wholeearth."
56The LORDcamedown to see the city and the towerwhich the sons of men had built.

The LORDsaid, "Behold, they are onepeople, and they all have d7the samelanguage. And this is what they began to do, and nownothingwhich they purpose to do will be eimpossible for them.
7"Come, 8let Us godown and there9confuse their flanguage, so that they will not understandoneanother'sgspeech."

So the LORD10scattered them abroad from thereover the face of the wholeearth ; and they stoppedbuilding the city.
9Therefore its name was calledh11Babel, becausethere the LORDconfused the ilanguage of the wholeearth ; and from there the LORDscattered them abroad over the face of the wholeearth.
