The Lordsends a amessage against Jacob, And it falls on Israel.
And all the peopleknow it, That is, 1Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, Asserting in pride and in 2arrogance of heart:
"The bricks have fallendown, But we will 3rebuild with smoothstones; The sycamores have been cutdown, But we will replace them with cedars."
Therefore the LORDraisesagainst them adversaries from 4Rezin And spurs their enemies on,
The Arameans on the east and the 5Philistines on the west; And they 6devourIsrael with bgapingjaws. 7In spite of allthis, His anger does not turnaway And His hand is stillstretched out.
Yet the people8do not turnback to Him who struck them, Nor do they 9seek the LORD of hosts.
So the LORDcutsoff10head and tail from Israel, Both palmbranch and bulrush11in a singleday.
The head is 12the elder and honorable man, And the prophet who teaches13falsehood is the tail.
1614For those who guidethispeople are leading them astray; And those who are guided by them are cbrought to confusion.
17Therefore the Lord does 15not takepleasure in their youngmen, 16Nor does He havepity on their dorphans or their widows; For everyone of them is 17godless and an 18evildoer, And every19mouth is speakingfoolishness. 20In spite of allthis, His anger does not turnaway And His hand is stillstretched out.
1821For wickednessburns like a fire; It consumesbriars and thorns; It even sets the thickets of the forestaflame And they rollupward in a column of smoke.
By the 22fury of the LORD of hosts the 23land is burned up, And the 24people are like fuel for the fire; No25manspares his brother.
20eThey sliceoff what is on the righthand but still are 26hungry, And fthey eat what is on the lefthand but they are not satisfied; Each of them eats the 27flesh of his own arm.
21Manasseh devours Ephraim, and EphraimManasseh, 28And together they are againstJudah. 29In spite of allthis, His anger does not turnaway And His hand is stillstretched out.
