Jesusanswered him, "I 2have spokenopenly to the world; I always3taught in synagogues and 4in the temple, whereall the Jewscometogether; and I spokenothing in secret.

"Why do you question Me? Questionthose who have heardwhat I spoke to them; they knowwhat I said."

When He had saidthis, one of the 5officersstandingnearby6struck*Jesus, saying, "Is that the way You answer the highpriest?"

7Jesusanswered him, "If I have spokenwrongly, testify of the wrong; but ifrightly, why do you strike Me?"

8SoAnnassent Him bound to 9Caiaphas the highpriest.
Peter's Denial of Jesus
2510Now11SimonPeter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, "12You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."

One of the slaves of the highpriest, being a relative of the one 13whoseearPetercutoff, said, "Did I not see you in 14the garden with Him?"

Peterthendenied it again, and immediately15a roostercrowed.
Jesus before Pilate
2816Then they ledJesus from 17Caiaphas into 18the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into 19the Praetoriumso that 20they would not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

21ThereforePilatewent out to them and said, "Whataccusation do you bring against thisMan?"

They answered and said to him, "IfthisMan were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him to you."

SoPilatesaid to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jewssaid to him, "We are not permitted to putanyone to death,"

to fulfill22the word of Jesuswhich He spoke, signifying by whatkind of death He was about to die.

ThereforePilate23enteredagain into the Praetorium, and summonedJesus and said to Him, "24Are You the King of the Jews?"

Jesusanswered, "Are you sayingthis on your owninitiative, or did otherstell you about Me?"

Pilateanswered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chiefpriestsdelivered You to me; what have You done?"

Jesusanswered, "25My kingdom is not of thisworld. If My kingdom were of thisworld, then My servants would be fightingso that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of thisrealm."

ThereforePilatesaid to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesusanswered, "26You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, 27to testify to the truth. 28Everyone who is of the truthhears My voice."

Pilatesaid to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had saidthis, he 29went out again to the Jews and said to them, "30 I findnoguilt in Him.

"31But you have a custom that I releasesomeone for you at the Passover; do you wishthen that I release for you the King of the Jews?"

So they cried out again, saying, "32Not thisMan, but Barabbas." NowBarabbas was a robber.
